The road maps itself.
Anyone who travels inter-city roads or daily city commutes knows how brutal potholes and broken asphalt can be. Hodos is a completely silent Android app that passively maps road surface hazards using phone motion sensors while you travel. No tapping screens while driving, no annoying phone vibrations, and zero privacy compromise.
Engineered for real travel.
Most road reporting tools fail because they demand driver attention or flood dispatchers with false alarms. Hodos is designed from the ground up for silent, unattended accuracy.
100% Autonomous Sensing
Uses adaptive Median Absolute Deviation (MAD) noise floor tracking so the algorithm continuously self-calibrates to heavy diesel bus suspensions, passenger cars, or motorbikes without manual adjustments.
Zero Distraction Guarantee
Completely silent background foreground-service. The smartphone never makes sounds, never vibrates on road bumps, and never displays intrusive popups while you drive or ride.
Privacy First by Design
The first and last 250 meters of every trip are trimmed on-device so your home, office, and private routes are never recorded. High-frequency raw accelerometer traces never leave device RAM.
438 Real Hazards Mapped Across 500+ Kilometers
During a single long-distance proving transit from Birendranagar to Kathmandu, the Hodos autonomous background service cataloged 438 verified hazards without human intervention.
Free software. Community-protected data.
Hodos balances free open collaboration for researchers and citizens with sustainable safeguards for public road data.
100% Free & Open Source
The Android companion app, sensor filters, and web dashboard are licensed under the MIT License. Anyone can audit the algorithms, compile the binaries, or contribute improvements.
- Zero telemetry lock-in or proprietary walls
- Auditable privacy trimming on GitHub
- Free to fork and build locally
Open for Citizens & Civic Groups
Road condition telemetry is protected under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. Citizens, university researchers, and civic authorities can download datasets for free non-commercial analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about testing Hodos and how the telemetry works.
Does my phone vibrate or make noise when driving over a pothole?
No. Hodos has a strict Zero Distraction guarantee. The phone will never vibrate, chime, or flash popups while you are in transit. Road safety always comes before telemetry.
How does Hodos protect my home and work locations?
Every journey has its first 250 meters and last 250 meters permanently trimmed directly on your device before points are synced. Your starting driveway, residential street, and workplace parking areas are never recorded or transmitted.
Do I need an active internet connection while driving?
No. Detected hazards are queued locally in an encrypted SQLite database on your device. When you regain cellular coverage or connect to Wi-Fi, the batch syncs quietly in the background.
Can commercial fleet operators use the data for free?
No. While citizens, civic organizations, and academic researchers can download and inspect the data freely under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, commercial fleet operators (courier networks, ride-hailing services, freight dispatchers) must purchase an enterprise commercial license.
Where can I download the app to test it?
You can download the compiled Android APK (v1.2.0) directly from our GitHub Releases page or compile it yourself from source using Android Studio.
